(1) Canada In medicinal applications, S-Equol is recognized as a Natural Health Product (NHP) and is classified under Schedule 1, Item 2 (an isolate) of the Natural Health Products Regulations. In non-medicinal applications, it is used as a skin conditioning agent, restricted to topical application.
(2) United States (S)-equol has not been directly included in the “GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) list” by the FDA, but it can be legally used in foods and supplements through the Self-GRAS process independently completed by companies.
(3) European Union (S)-equol has not yet been approved as a food or dietary supplement ingredient in the European Union.
